Stephen Kerr is a senior partner in the firm’s Financial Institutions and Mergers & Acquisitions groups and is currently the chair of the firm’s committee responsible for the U.S. market.
Stephen practises general corporate/commercial law, with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, particularly in the financial services industry. Stephen's clients include banks, insurance companies, insurance brokers, developers, health companies, dairy companies, transportation companies and other regulated industries. A significant portion of Stephen's practice involves providing general counsel advice to both large and mid-size businesses concerning acquisition and divestment strategies, corporate governance, complex reorganizations and material commercial agreements. Stephen provides ongoing assistance to financial services clients (among others) in a number of areas including advising on banking, insurance, reinsurance, and other political and regulatory matters, at both the provincial and federal level. Stephen also advises on the incorporation and registration of regulated financial institutions and has advised on various portfolio transfers among regulated financial institutions.
A significant part of Stephen’s practice is dedicated to advising foreign clients on cross-border transactions whereby a foreign client acquires Canadian assets. In this regard, Stephen has advised French, English, U.S. and Chinese clients in their acquisition strategies in Canada.
