Mariella Lo Papa is the Co-Leader of the national Real Estate Law Practice Group at Fasken Martineau, as well as the co-chair of the Firm’s Montréal Real Estate Group. Her practice focuses on the leasing of retail, office and industrial properties, sale/lease back transactions, and also includes the development, acquisition & disposition of real estate.
Mariella was selected by her peers for inclusion in the 2018 Best Lawyers in Canada for her work in Commercial Leasing Law and was named an expert in her field in the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Canadian publication Lexpert, a directory of leading law firms and practitioners in Canada. She represents owners, tenants, real estate developers, portfolio managers and leasing experts in complex matters. Her clients seek out her advice on daily operations, development and revitalization issues, owner/tenant negotiations and problems associated with operating properties.
The list of clients she has represented and transacted with includes such major retail industry players as Holt Renfrew, Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Jean Coutu, Shoppers Drug Mart, Loblaws, Metro, Best Buy, Sports Expert, Cabelas, Walmart, JYSK, Prime Restaurants and Winners, all companies that operate in a wide range of sectors, from building materials, food, pharma and sporting goods, to fashion and restaurants.
Mariella has counseled clients, such as Warner Bros. Studios, Heenan Blaikie LLP, Covidien Ltd., Sika Canada, Coty Canada, L'Oréal Canada and Argex Titanium, for the leasing of space in office towers, mixed-use projects, single-occupant properties and industrial facilities, including in connection with custom-build projects. Mariella represented the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) for its new headquarters in Montreal, Québec.
With broad experience as both a partner in another national law firm for 13 years and as in-house counsel for 5 years for a national tenant real estate brokerage firm, Mariella has developed a pragmatic approach to getting deals done. In 2014, Mariella was named to the Editorial Board of the ICSC Shopping Center Legal Update as one of three Canadian members.
